Let there be Sound

Currently living in Ste-Croix but mostly performing in Geneva – Switzerland, I am a research engineer in power electronics, a sound artist, a producer of cultural events and an independent film curator. Perhaps, what brings these seemingly very different environments together is the way I approach them: often acting as a facilitator or a catalyst, in a transdisciplinary, collaborative and didactic dynamic.

I am deeply interested in the potential offered by the liminal spaces that emerge in contacts between science, art and technology, and I seek to make it accessible through a work of simple and inclusive demystification. Contrary to popular belief, these worlds and fields, these ontologies, are not so far apart, and this is undoubtedly what motivates my work.

Since the early days of my artistic practice, I have found myself particularly at ease with desacralizing scientific concepts and the use of laboratory machines. My first piece, Conférence Noise – Développement Durable Acousmatique, was presented in 2014. It was a sort of fake parody of a scientific lecture on the origins of noise music, using real and fake references to blur the issue and take the audience both literally and figuratively, into a world of pataphysical white noise. There was a sequel entitled De la Cadavérologie des Sons and finally a book: Conférence Noise I et II.

Shortly afterwards, I visited the old laboratories of CERN and institutes of Technology, picking up function generators, oscilloscopes and other oscillators that had been rendered obsolete by the latest generations of digital equipment. These were heavy instruments, used originally in fundamental electronics research. The result of this collecting was an orchestra of generators, played four-handed with Emma Souharce. Our Bilblioteq Mdulair project comes from the modulability of machines and this infinite source of sounds, reflecting Borges’s Library of Babel, which is a short story I’m particularly fond of.

In our collaborations, I really enjoyed the performances with Synkie – a modular analogue video synthesizer from the [ a n y m a ] collective – bringing a real analogue audiovisual symbiosis that responded well to the function generators. So we travelled to Eastern Europe in a truck filled to the brim, including Moscow and Kiev, with a grand finale at the Stalinist Palace of Science and Culture in Warsaw. It was after this trip, during a presentation in Brussels, that the album Primitive Electronics Brain Dance was recorded in one go, resulting in a beautiful vinyl engraved by Flo Kaufmann.

I am currently working on algorithmic musical compositions for spatialised sound performances and autonomous installations. I collaborate extensively with the writer and scientist André Ourednik on various creations involving VR and AI in augmented reading performances. I have also taken part in a number of cross-disciplinary projects, notably with Antón de Macedo, Lucie Eidenbez and the Robert Turner collective. Bringing sound to interact with images and body movements, whether organic, mineral or celestial, offers an extra dimension of sensoriality, transcending perceptions while seeking synesthetic effects.

The body, as a sonic and performative instrument, was particularly evident in a set-up that featured a performative action-noise musical piece entitled SM Noise, a collective project that proposed an intimate, feminist approach to notions of BDSM practice. The sound material was close to the actions on stage, allowing for a rendering that aimed for autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) effects for a very intimate sonic proximity. This project travelled to Japan in 2018, where we collaborated with Shibari artist Kasumi Hurai. As a performer, I have used my bondage practice for socio-politically engaged works in favour of diversity and gender equality, including presenting a self-suspension piece in various performative, scenic or cinematic contexts.

There is something infinite about electroacoustic and electromagnetic music in its narrative possibilities, because of the freedom it gives you to break away from the rhythmic and harmonic patterns and constraints of music in general. Thus, after the function generators, I set about building myself a set of analogue synthesisers with a loop function and feedback. As input sources the used magnetic wave sensors and electrical piezo sensors to transform vibrations into sounds, and as output sources, several loudspeakers arranged in the sound space. In my collaboration with Nat Cilia, our duo Influut explores an approach to composition that allows instrumental and vocal harmonies to coexist with mechanical and electronic sound objects. Here, two opposing but complementary approaches come together, leaving room for improvisation and algorithmic sound events to construct a musical narrative that follows organic flows with a technological component.

As a qualitative study of psychoacoustic and binaural effects on consciousness, my music is made up of successive layers of low-frequency movements and sonified brainwaves, seeking a form of immersive hypnosis. These elements can be found in my solo project, which takes several forms, from the powerful noise music with various Tesla coils of Fulgur and KosmoSCore Blitz, to the drones and soaring atmospheres of Kosmosmonium and EMC:EMI, to the marathon sleep concerts of KosmoSleep. All this is combined with a specific focus on the use of electrical phenomena and electromagnetic fields. To complement these physical machines, I developed my own digital synthesisers with the SuperCollider environment, which enabled me to push sound effects towards greater precision, facilitating multichannel processing and digital filtering of sound inputs and opening infinite possibilities for synthesising and processing waves to recreate resonances found in nature or in our own brains.

After several years of research, I came up with a sound installation device that includes an autonomous programmable processor for my real-time audio signal processing algorithms. An artificial neural network has been implemented with a number of cells, each corresponding to an audio channel. The signal emitted by each neuron is the result of a matrix combination whose coefficients reflect the sound interactions in the network. The original sound source comes from micro-contacts and is processed by the neural network to obtain an organic movement effect. This is how I came up with the idea for Sonic Tree – a metal structure in a concrete room, contrasting with the organic movements that its shape recalls. Its virtual cells exchange electrical signals, and its metal cells propagate sound faster than air. Today, following new research, a new symbiotic layer has been added to explore a synthetic interaction of sound and touch with a surface representing mycelium that exchanges fluids with the tree.

My initial motivation for using algorithms is to make accessible and popularise ideas that have been put on a pedestal as scientific or technological. I want to bring these concepts to everyone. The sonification of data, whatever it may be, allows me to accompany the discourse and bring an understanding of sociological, scientific, ecological or simply technological nature. Demystifying terms and practices so that they can be presented in a fun and educational way – without going so far as to simplify science – has encouraged me to introduce these techniques in participatory workshops for all levels and where I have been able to appreciate the fact that even children can code. So, travelling the world, both at conferences and in galleries, I’ve contributed to several soundtracks and publications, and give seminars and workshops, all while adopting an approach that combines science and art, and giving a voice to both the engineer and the artist.
