Spontaneous Composition Duo with Violet Wand, Electromagnetic sensors, analogue feedbacks, and a mini Tesla Coil.

This improvised duo of spontaneous composition looks into the scientific music of the last century. Using several instruments originally developed by Nikola Tesla, these two sound researchers dream of recreating the world of scientific presentation that led to the discovery of the extraordinary properties of electromagnetism. With a Violet Wand – initially used as a therapeutic medical instrument by a few self-proclaimed “healers” – a Tesla coil – a mini lightning machine that makes noise and flashes for no other purpose – and lots of wave sensors and other fantastic machines, the audience is invited to travel to the sound of the electron.

Flo Kaufmann, a sound artist from Solothurn, describes himself as a “universal tinkerer”. Trained as an electrical engineer, he has a deep affinity with and understanding of the world of sound, whether produced acoustically or electronically. He works with obsolete sound-recording technologies and end-of-life electrical equipment to invent out-of-the-ordinary sound machines and instruments. One aspect of his work involves exploring electromagnetic fields by installing a jumble of wave sensors, receivers, antennae and devices to make them audible.
